Southeast Asia Travel Guide

Economical journey

For decades, backpackers have been drawn to Southeast Asia, carving out a well-trodden path that has become iconic for adventurous travelers.

The journey typically begins in Thailand, with its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. From there, the route winds through the emerging beauty of Laos continues across the historical landscapes of Vietnam, and leads to the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. After exploring these wonders, travelers often circle back into Thailand, heading south to enjoy the lively party scene on the Thai islands before venturing further down to explore the diverse offerings of Malaysia and Singapore.

While there are variations to this classic trail, this is the essence of the Southeast Asian backpacking experience.

I’ve been exploring this region and have spent years living in Thailand. My deep love for backpacking in Southeast Asia has led me to write extensively about it, as I know the region like the back of my hand.

Southeast Asia is particularly appealing to new travelers due to its ease of travel, safety, and vibrant community of fellow adventurers you’ll meet along the way. However, even seasoned travelers will find joy here, as the region offers countless hidden gems that lie beyond the usual backpacker trail.

Simply put, Southeast Asia caters to every type of travelers and every budget.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Southeast Asia

This Southeast Asia travel guide will help you travel the region like a pro, ensuring you save money and make the most of your time in this fun, gorgeous, and lively corner of the world.

1. Cruise Halong Bay (Vietnam):

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of Vietnam’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Take a cruise through the bay to explore hidden caves, floating villages, and pristine beaches. Whether you choose a luxurious boat or a traditional junk, this tranquil journey through one of Vietnam’s most beautiful landscapes is a must.

2. Relax on the Beaches of the Thai Islands

Thailand’s islands are famous for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant nightlife. From the bustling shores of Phuket and Koh Samui to the tranquil beaches of Koh Tao and Koh Lipe, there’s an island to suit every traveler’s taste. Whether you want to dive into the turquoise waters, party until dawn, or simply unwind on the sand, the Thai islands offer the perfect escape.

3. Explore the Temples of Angkor Wat (Cambodia)

Angkor Wat is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world. This massive temple complex, built in the early 12th century, is a testament to the grandeur of the Khmer Empire. Wander through ancient stone corridors, marvel at intricate carvings, and catch a breathtaking sunrise over the main temple—an experience that will stay with you forever.

4. Admire the sunrise over an Indonesian Volcano

Don’t miss out on getting a photo of the smouldering Bromo volcano as it lies surrounded by the almost lunar landscape of the Sea of Sand. Get up early to catch one of the most memorable sunrises of your life.

5. Go jungle trekking

The best jungle treks are found in northern Thailand, Western Laos, and Malaysian Borneo (the latter are also the hardest and most intense). Some of my favourites include Danum Valley (Borneo) for its incredible wildlife; Ratanakiri (Cambodia) for its pristine wilderness and thousand-year-old trees; and Pu Luong Nature Reserve (Vietnam). Costs vary but jungle trekking generally costs $30-50 USD per day.
